Berry season is near! Rarely does a day go by that I don’t eat at least one serving of berries. Usually, it’s more like two servings — and I especially love when I can get them locally. Whether it be with my breakfast or as a standalone snack, I find room to have my blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries. There are more berries out there, and I am aware that strawberries and raspberries aren’t true berries, but for the sake of simplicity I’m leaving them in my berry category! I’m talking fruits that end with BERRY.

So as the blog title asks, “What’s so good about berries?” Here’s a little list to get us going.

Antioxidants

Antioxidant-rich foods help protect against heart disease, some cancers and even help protect the nervous system. I’ll take that assist any day!

Fiber

Berries are excellent sources of fiber. It’s the all-important nutrient that so many people have just can’t seem to fit into their diet in the proper amount. Berries are an excellent way to give your fiber intake from whole food sources a boost.

Blood Sugar Management

For individuals with diabetes, fruits can be a tricky topic. The good thing about berries, is that their sugar content doesn’t lead to blood sugar spikes.

Weight Loss

In addition to all of the other benefits of berries, they can also help if weight loss is one of your goals. We’ve already talked about the fiber content, but berries also have a high water content. The combination of the two lead to a natural feeling of fullness. Listen to your body. If you’re full, stop eating.

Hope you enjoy your daily dose of berries!!
